The PhD Office invites all incoming doctoral students to PhD Orientation Week 2026, taking place from 7 to 11 September 2026.
This is a week of events and workshops designed to help new students navigate doctoral studies smoothly and confidently. The programme covers your rights and responsibilities, key deadlines, the people around you, and your own work. The transition to a PhD brings greater freedom, but also greater uncertainty — along with many things that are often not formally taught. That is exactly why the programme has been put together.
The Vice-Rector for Doctoral Studies, prof. Dr. Ing. Michaela Rumlová, is contacting supervisors separately to ask them to support their students' participation and to release them from other duties where necessary.
Most of the programme runs in English, the language of science, research, and doctoral study.
PROGRAMME
You do not need to attend the entire week. We strongly recommend coming on Monday for Orientation Day and completing the mandatory health and safety training on Friday. For the days in between, choose whichever workshop is most relevant to you right now. Places are limited, so we encourage you to register as soon as possible.
Mon 7 Sep | 9:00–12:30 | Orientation Day
Come and find out how doctoral studies work, meet your peers and key contacts. You will learn about your duties and rights, project opportunities, the amount and composition of the minimum doctoral income, which deadlines to keep track of from the very beginning and who to turn to for what.
Tue 8 Sep | 9:00–16:00 | Workshop: Teaching Fundamentals (Czech only)
For those who will be teaching or supervising lab sessions. A condensed version of the Crash Course: what makes good teaching, how to communicate with students, and how to work with their motivation:
The English version of this teaching course will be held on 9 and 11 February 2027, 9:00–15:00. You are welcome to register already (EN).
Wed 9 Sep | 9:00–11:00 | Workshop: Ethics and Integrity in Research (EN)
Are you starting out on your career in research? Curious about how you’d handle tricky situations where the line between ethical and unethical decisions in academia may not always be clear? Join us for the Dilemma Game, an interactive workshop focused on academic integrity, to explore real-life ethical challenges often faced by doctoral students and researchers.
Working in small groups, you will discuss dilemmas related to authorship, peer review, academic relationships, and the use of AI – all with a view to comparing perspectives and weighing your options. There are no right or wrong answers; the goal is to think through complex situations, share experiences, and gain confidence in navigating them.
The session offers a safe and engaging space to “play with integrity,” connect with others in your peer group, and deepen your understanding of responsible research practices.

Thu 10 Sep | 9:00–13:00 | Workshop: Time Management for New PhD Students (EN)
Doctoral studies bring a high degree of autonomy, new roles and sometimes unclear expectations that not everyone may be prepared for. This practically focused workshop helps participants navigate the reality of PhD studies and develop a sustainable working system for the long term.
The workshop focuses on the specifics of time management in an academic environment – working with uncertainty, independent planning without clearly defined tasks, balancing parallel roles (research, teaching, own study) and overcoming typical obstacles, such as procrastination. The workshop will also address setting boundaries in communication and preventing burnout.
Emphasis will be placed on practical activities: participants will learn to break down unclear tasks into specific steps, identify their optimal time for deep work and create their own realistic work plan for the first period of their doctoral studies.
Fri 11 Sep | 9:00–12:30 | Health and Safety Training (CZ/EN)
Mandatory training covering workplace safety, fire protection, and handling of pressurised containers:
We look forward to welcoming you at PhD Orientation Week and hope the programme gives you a confident and smooth start to your doctoral studies.
