[obsah] => What is onboarding?
Onboarding is a key process of integrating new employees into the organisation, thereby enhancing both their professional, social, cultural and organisational integration. As a result, employees feel welcomed as part of the organisation and better prepared for the tasks ahead of them. The sooner the new employee feels welcome and fully informed, the better and quicker they will be able to contribute to the organisation successfully.
Onboarding procedures are common in the private sector but often absent in academic institutions. In particular for newly hired Early Career Researchers (ECR), namely PhD candidates, such procedures will strongly impact both their integration into the organisation and clarification of roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders involved in their programme. In order to maximize their impact, it is therefore important that onboarding procedures are approved and supported by supervisors and Postgraduate offices. While it has been shown that successful onboarding contributes to increased well-being and motivation, many ECRs often feel somewhat lost and poorly supported when entering academia, leading to doubt, insecurity and sometimes even an early abandonment of their research project.
UCT and onboarding
In collaboration with the PRIDE network (Professionals in Doctoral Education), a working group was formed with the aim of drafting a publication on onboarding, focusing for the first time on doctoral candidates and postdocs and their adaptation process at the university.
UCT Prague initially launched an extensive questionnaire to assess awareness of onboarding, whether and how many people have encountered it, and what they would welcome within the academic environment. After evaluating the questionnaire, meetings were held in the private sector with HR professionals. We wanted to verify how onboarding is conducted in private companies and how we can leverage their know-how and experiences in our context.
The collected materials and interviews with HR professionals were used to create an adaptation plan, which was piloted from September 2023 at three institutes of UCT Prague. The resulting adaptation plan, which is part of this page, will serve the needs of UCT Prague supervisors who work with newly hired doctoral candidates. Furthermore, the adaptation plan will be utilized for the PRIDE network publication, serving as a foundation for other European universities.

[obsah] => What is a “Double-Degree” programme?
It is doctoral study programme that is leading to two diplomas from both home university as well as partner university. Student works on one dissertation, the study programmes are fully integrated between collaborating universities and include specialized courses at home university and one interdisciplinary at partner university.
Each successful applicant signs individual contract about doctoral double degree based on his/her particular situation (research area, supervisor’s requirements, home university requirements etc.). The contract is signed between UCT Prague and student’s home university.
Requirements for doctoral double degree contract:
- Student has to agree with two supervisors – one from the home university, one from UCT Prague
- Student has to be accepted by his/her supervisor to PhD studies at UCT Prague
- Student has to be accepted to PhD studies at his/her home university
- UCT Prague and student’s home university have to have a joint double degree study programme (list of offered programmes below)

Finances
In terms of cooperation with partner universities no tuition is required. Students are expected to cover any additional costs themselves.
What are the advantages?
Besides improved employability of graduates, there is emphasis on research activity coupled with a possibility to lead small research groups. The program inherently strengthens professional language knowledge. There are possibilities to gain practical skills thanks to cooperation with partner companies such as Zentiva, Zeva, Contipro, Lonza Biotec or in practically oriented departments of Czech Academy of Sciences, where are practical traineeships available. Last but not least there is excellent support of students, including motivational scholarships.

Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology
The aim of the study programme is to educate top experts with the potential to manage and implement scientific and research activities both in academic sector and in management positions within industrial research or in government/control bodies. The study programme is aimed at broadening knowledge in a number of complementary disciplines: (i) evaluation of the bioactivity of chemical compounds and their mixtures (health and toxic effects) as a basis for assessing their effects on human health and living organisms, (ii) understanding of the mechanism of physico-chemical reactions and processes in food, dietary supplements or natural products under different processing and storage conditions; (iii) expertise with the application potential of instrumental platforms in the field of target analysis and, in particular, non-target screening for the characterisation of different types of samples and (iv) the application of advanced chemometric strategies and bioinformatics in the processing and interpretation of experimental data, especially in metabolomics. CareersThe graduate of the programme will acquire comprehensive knowledge and expertise in the field of food chemistry and natural products, including knowledge of the reactions taking place in technological processing. Due to deep theoretical and practical knowledge, a doctoral graduate can apply modern analytical techniques to a comprehensive assessment of the quality and chemical safety of food and natural products, to detect food fraud and /or prove their authenticity. Ph.D. topics for study year 2024/25Analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in environment
AnnotationThis dissertation will focus on the development of analytical methods for determining a wide range of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment, including food and drinking water, which are the main dietary sources of human exposure. The work aims to extend existing methods to include new substances, such as short-chain carboxylic acids (C2-C3), unsaturated perfluoroalkyl acids, telomeric compounds including their precursors. The research will also explore the implementation of novel procedures in the analysis of PFAS, specifically total oxidable precursors. In case of food, attention will be given to commodities recommended by the European Commission (EU 2022/1431) for monitoring. Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry will be employed for analysing targeted chemicals, for some substances gas chromatography with mass spectrometry will also be applied. The new analytical procedures will be used to assess the environmental burden and dietary exposure of the Czech population to these substances. This work provides a new data necessary for the complex risk assessment associated with the exposure of different population groups to these substances. Additionally, it will serve as a basis for implementing new European legislation in the following years.

Evaluation of food raw materials and products using instrumental methods and their comparison with sensory analysis
AnnotationThe main topic of the dissertation is the application of selected instrumental methods such as infrared spectrometry or mass spectrometry with the aim of optimizing the rapid characterization of various food raw materials and products, including through advanced mathematical-statistical methods inclusive multivariate data analysis. Then compare these methods with sensory evaluation and thus create a comprehensive view of the overall quality evaluation in connection not only with legislative requirements but also with requirements for target sensory quality. The goal of the work is to develop analytical procedures for various materials suitable for their characterization so that they can be used for a meaningful comparison with sensory analysis for evaluation, for example, according to origin or degree of technological processing.
